Where Should You Apply?: College Visit
Where Should You Apply?: College Visit
Once you have learned as much as you can about a preliminary list of colleges from indirect sources, you will find campus visits extremely helpful in narrowing your list further. Some students take a college tour to look at several colleges, usually with parents or with an organized group, during spring break in their junior year. A tour at that time has the advantage of letting you see schools while classes are in session and the campuses are fully alive. A visit usually includes an hour-long group information session led by an admissions officer, sometimes with a student participant as well, and a group tour led by a student tour guide. Both help you get a quick overview of a college and answer some questions you may have.

Is a College Degree Really Worth the Cost?
Is a College Degree Really Worth the Cost?
As the values of real estate, stocks, and bonds evaporate, people seem to be questioning whether investing time and money in a college degree is worthwhile. The answer, it turns out, is pretty clear: A wide variety of studies show that, on average, college pays off in financial and nonfinancial ways. But some college graduates—especially those who attend low-quality institutions or take worthless courses—will be below that average and might very well be wasting their time and money. Those who are lucky, smart, and diligent enough to attend high-quality colleges and earn in-demand degrees will be far more likely to reap big rewards.
