Living Arrangements

The proportion of college students who drink varies depending on where they live. Drinking rates are highest in fraternities and sororities followed by on-campus housing (e.g., dormitories, residence halls) (Presley et al., 1996a, 1996b; Wechsler et al., 1998, 2000b). Students who live independently off-site (e.g., in apartments) drink less, while commuting students who live with their families drink the least (O'Hare, 1990; Wechsler et al., 2002).

The Mechanics of Coverdells: Managing Your Account
The Mechanics of Coverdells: Managing Your Account
You maintain total control over the investments in any Coverdell account for which you're the responsible individual, even though your designated beneficiary is actually the account owner. This seems to be a complete turnaround from Section 529 plans (where you're the plan owner but don't really own the plan assets and have very limited control over the actual investments).

Where Should You Apply?: Selectivity and Your College List
Where Should You Apply?: Selectivity and Your College List
Wise students distribute their college choices among three categories based on likelihood of admission. The first category is good-bet colleges, includes those where you are almost certain to be admitted. The next category is possible colleges which involves chances that can range from fairly likely to fifty-fifty to not too likely. It is the broadest of the categories. The final category is called long-shot colleges which includes those where the college’s acceptance rate in conjunction with your own record makes admission unlikely but not impossible. These three categories correspond to popular terminology with which you may be more familiar: safety, target, and reach colleges. The terms—good-bet, possible, and long-shot colleges—more accurately capture the objective reality of admissions, rather than the scale of your hopes. Whatever the language used, the issue is selectivity, not quality. The problem is in confusing the two. Just because a school is a long shot doesn’t necessarily mean it is desirable for you. It is just popular and hard to get into.

The Big Tests: How Should You Prepare for the SAT
The Big Tests: How Should You Prepare for the SAT
Test developers know that the score on a given test is based on three factors. First, how much do you know about the subject matter being tested? If a question requires a certain kind of calculation, you won’t get it right if you don’t know how to do it. The second factor deals with test-taking skills—how comfortable are you taking such tests in general, and how familiar are you with the construction of the test? And finally, and most disconcerting, each test score has a random component—the luck of the draw—on the day of the test. No exam can exhaustively test your knowledge. It can only sample it at a certain moment. The specific questions on a given test may or may not reflect your broader knowledge well. And you might not be feeling your best that day. There is no box to check if you have the flu, though you can cancel your scores within a few days of taking the test.
