Ever wanted to get involved on your college campus, but didn't quite know how? Do you have a passion for business and networking with others? If so, you may want to consider starting a business club on your college campus. There's numerous opportunities for students to get involved during their college careers, but one thing that many universities (especially small or private) are missing is a business club. Read on for more tips on starting one! This is especially useful if you have a passion for business, but the rules listed apply to any student who wishes to create their own club.
Steps to Success
First, you want to identify the student demographic that you are going to focus on attracting. Focus on figuring out whether you want this to be a club available to all students, or if you would rather have it be more selective. First and foremost, create a mission statement for your club. This is what will ultimately guide you throughout the life of the club, so use good discretion in this. Finally, follow the steps listed below in order to get your club up and running on campus.

The most important thing that first needs to get done is to get approval for your club. To do this, you will more than likely need to draft a proposal and submit it to the Student Activities board at your school. They will then review it and ensure that your club's missions and intentions are coherent with the guidelines set by the school.
Once you have approval for your club, you need to begin constructing it. Create an organizational structure for the club and designate officers (you can do this by selection or election among the student body). They are the guiding visionaries of your club, so proceed through this process with vigilance. Be discretionary - popularity does not always equate with leadership ability.
Once your core group has been established, begin planning! This is the fun part. Organize events and meetings based around what you think students would like to see. Focus on a good mix of serious and fun events, and you will have a good foundation to build upon (of course, always make sure to get approval from your Student Activities office before finalizing an event).
Next, start the promotional cycle. This can manifest itself in many ways, but I would focus on the interpersonal and online mediums. This can involve building a website and promoting it via various social networks - many colleges actually now actively promote this, as essentially all college students have moved their social lives to Facebook. Also, promote via word-of-mouth and put up flyers and the like around campus. You would be surprised how many people will be interested and drop by on the date of your first meeting!
Moving Forward
Alright, so you've had your first meeting, and organized your first big event - your club is now in the clear, right? The answer to that is a resounding "No"! You are still relatively new on campus, so stay focused and work hard to build a positive repoire with the faculty and student body at large. Be sure to network with staff and administration in different departments, so that when the time comes to collaborate with another club for a big event, the grassroots connections will be set in place! And most importantly, stay passionate! It's easy to get discouraged when you don't gain any new members week after week, but push forwards anyways. More than likely, students will recognize your hard work and join your movement in time. After all, great successes are almost never built up overnight.
