Determining Your Study Abroad Courseload
Determining Your Study Abroad Courseload
Studying abroad is not a vacation . . . at least as far as your home university is concerned. You need to assume that your home university expects you to take as many courses and study just as hard in taking them as you would if you were staying home for the year. And because you want to blend in with the students at your university abroad, you need to expect to take the same amount of classes and do the same work that is required of native students.

Textbook Reading
Textbook Reading
Reading a textbook will be easier if you get organized before reading. Check out the title to see if you know anything about the topic. It may be a good idea to write down what you know or do not know about the topic. Talk to students and others about what you read. Ask questions about what you do not know and want answers to before you read the chapters. It is a good idea to share your knowledge with others to see what else you can learn.

EMA - is it really beneficial, or is it a handout?
EMA - is it really beneficial, or is it a handout?
EMA, or Education Maintenance Allowance, is a financial scheme aimed at keeping students of a low household income in education past the school leaving age of 16. This means that if the student is from a household where the income is below £20,817 annually, they will qualify to recieve £30 per week paid directly into their own bank accounts.
The idea is that being from low income families means that the 16 - 19 year old will feel they need to go straight into employment when they leave school in order to support themselves, and that they will not be able to afford to pay for college resources, travel etc. The sceme aims to make a further education possible for such teens.
In order to recieve their payments, the students must have 100% attendance to their learning programme at college, which is thought to be an incentive for the students to attend their classes.
