Preparing for College / Survival of Your First Semester![]() Before you know it, college arrives in a flash and you probably ask yourself, "Is this really happening?" Your parents are more than excited to see you leaving and starting a new journey. I experienced this with my dad and to this day I still sit back and say wow, I'm really here. Movies tend to give us the idea that college is a fun way of life, an adventure, but most of them will lead you falsely. I admit that I was overly excited about starting college, but I soon realized that college is not as easy as it is cut out to be. High schools are not preparing students for college. All those AP classes are great and they excuse the student from having to take the class when they enter college, but do the classes give them the full benefit that they need? The answer is no. I took a few AP classes in high school and each one was very different to the courses I've taken in college. They do not give you the hands-on experience that college actually gives you. So what I'm getting at is that even though you feel prepared for college, I want to warn you that its no easy breeze. You will find that college is a lot harder than high school. The work is more involved. You will need to spend three hours to every class hour you attend studying. But I'm not trying to scare you. Its very possible to get by. I'm doing just fine, although I was very stressed during my first semester. Just take it easy, listen to your professors, and DO NOT procrastinate. That was easy to do in high school, but its impossible to do so in college. College students may have done well with procrastination, but I do not advise it. I suggest you read over your assignments, ask for help, and do as much as you can before your assignments are due. Colleges are not there to say "Here's the work, now do it!" They want to help you because you are new. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Many of my professors say that only two students out of an entire class will ask for help. They are there for you, so take advantage of what you can get. Trust me, it does help. I invite you to ask questions. Whether it is about preparation, what to do, how to balance your schedule, I am all ears. |
