Studying Tips / Other Techniques for MemorizingThere are a lot of other memorizing techniques available. For example: Chunking, Rhymes & Songs, Repetition, Visual, Auditory, Linking, Keywords, Flashcards. Read more about the different techniques here. Chunking is one of if not the oldest method used in Memorization. Items as divided into small and easily remembered chunks. If the order of recall in not important it works well. A lot of us have problems remember multi-digit (long) numbers; PIN; ‘phone; password etc). Chunking is good for this. Committing complicated spelling to memory is also applicable. I have difficulty remembering (and reading) 05056452458 but 050 645 2458 is a piece of cake. An example with words might be Constantinople or con stan tin ople. Rhyming and songs is another excellent one. In fourteen hundred and ninety two, Columbus sailed the Ocean Blue. Repetition is the way we learn out tables and alphabet, 1 x2 is 2; 2x2 is 4............... A,B,C,D............ It can be used for more complex memory retention as we get older. Visual is another form of repetition. Visual Learners need to see information over and over again to let it settle in their brains. Flash cards are an excellent technique for visual memorisation. By definition auditory students learn best with their ears. These students should listen to the information over and over to achieve memorisation. Actors use this technique, repeating lines over and over. Reading the information aloud is excellent as a large section of your brain is focused on speaking rather than listening alone a large section of your brain is focused on speaking, rather than simply listening and memorizing. The Link method is claimed to be one of the easiest mnemonic techniques to use. Make simple associations between items in your list and link them with a strong image containing those items. The keyword method is a very widely studied particularly in language study. In order to remember a new item of information, find a suitable substitution (keyword). It is then associated with the meaning of the original word in a mental picture. By recalling the keyword the original word and its meaning is remembered. There are many ways of using flash cards and the scope of this article does not allow full descriptions. The usual method is to create two piles from the original deck. Pick a card from one pile. If you get the answer right set it in one pile; if wrong in another. Once you are left with a pile or wrong answers repeat until all answers are correct. |
